What Colour is Oscar?

oscar-statuettesIt’s been many years since I took any interest in the Oscars. At one time I wouldn’t miss the TV broadcast of the awards and I’d do everything I could to make sure I didn’t hear any results before I saw it.
The broadcast in Australia was always delayed so it could be screened in prime time.
But as I said, that was long ago. These day’s I wouldn’t recognise the titles of most the films nominated.

The segment of the awards that kept my interest longest was the tribute to those who’d died during the year, where there could often be more surprises than in the announcement of the winners.
This year, in the lead up to an awards show that I won’t be watching, I couldn’t help being made aware of the controversy regarding the lack of African Americans among those nominated.

It seems there will be some boycotts.

As I said, I no longer take much of an interest in the awards themselves, but the threatened boycott raises one or two issues about race. Maybe it’s time to divide the nominations equally, so out of the standard five nominees for each category there should be one white nomination, one black nomination, one Hispanic, one Asian and one gay.*

Maybe it’s the only way to ensure all appearances of prejudice are avoided.
But then again, maybe it would be nice if race and colour played NO part at all – that ALL could consider others AND THEMSELVES as actors, directors etc., instead of actors/directors of a particular race or colour, and an Oscar category can be populated entirely with “white” names – or entirely with “black” names without leading to claims of racism.
And if only that same attitude could be seen across all sections of the community…

But maybe that’s expecting far too much in a world where racism clearly remains a serious problem, and where some sections of the community can continually be referred to (even by themselves) as “minorities”.

Latest ISIS Recruits in Action (2)

Few things can benefit ISIS more than prominent Western political “celebrities” (hopefuls) helping to increase suspicion and hostility against the average Muslim living in the west.

It helps ISIS cause unrest, leading to potential hatred and increased fear,  in places that the terrorists can’t reach themselves.

trump

The Philadelphia Daily News had a hard-hitting reaction on Tuesday to Donald Trump’s proposal to bar all Muslims immigrants and tourists from entering the US.

The tabloid’s cover directly compared the Trump to Adolf Hitler, using a photo of the Republican presidential front-runner with his arm raised to look like a Nazi salute. The front-page headline further used a “furor” pun to compare Trump to the German Führer.

AND

abbott

It seems that Tony Abbott has taken a page out of Donald Trump’s campaign booklet. Last night, in a Sky News interview with Paul Murray, Abbott managed to further alienate an already ailing Muslim community and reinforce white-supremacists everywhere in one fell swoop.
As a self-proclaimed expert on cultural issues, Abbott has used his personal experience as a Catholic, white male to champion the “freedom and tolerance” in “Western” culture and demanded that the “live and let live” Muslims recognise that “all cultures are not equal” and push for a revolutionary “Islamic reformation” from within.

Latest ISIS Recruits in action

Over the weekend there were several violent clashes around Australia, centred on “Reclaim Australia” rallies.

Sadly it seems that false prophet Danny Nalliah, head of Catch the Fire Ministries (and also head of Rise Up Australia, his own political party) has a strong involvement with Reclaim Australia. I’ve seen him on the TV news a few times speaking at their rallies.

Nalliah infamously “prophesied” election results back around 2007. His prophecy failed miserably. He never backed down from his predictions, but blamed Australian Christians for not voting in line with his prediction. Since then he started his own political party, which now seems to be aligned with the Reclaim Australia movement.

Nalliah long ago fell for the apostate mix of politics and religion that is increasingly becoming the face of “christianity”.

ISIS recruitsOn the other side of the equation are anti-racism protestors, some of whom aren’t averse to using violence in their opposition to Reclaim Australia – and RA aren’t averse to violent retaliation.

I’m sure that ISIS must be thrilled with the actions of these unwitting (and witless) recruits.

John Safran made the following observations in an article linked below the quotes.

About half of these Reclaim Australia people are from Catch the Fire Ministry, or their political branch, Rise Up Australia.

Catch The Fire Ministry/Rise Up Australia is not the only gang here supporting Reclaim Australia. I walk away from the ute, deeper into the crowd where big red flags cast shadows. This is the territory of the far-right United Patriots Front. Here are white Australians who look like bikies.

Danny Nallah’s back on the ute. He starts screaming about his love of his brothers in the United Patriot Front. Still, I don’t think this is the mask slipping off a racist self-hating brown man. I think Danny is leveraging secular white Australia’s xenophobia to serve his Christian agenda.

“Turn on the gas!” a leather-clad man shouts at Jewish John Safran.

“Is that a joke?” I ask.

“No, no,” he mumbles, immediately backing down. I’ve met Holocaust deniers before but this is the first Holocaust joke denier I’ve come across.
